Despite kibitzers predicting a PHI win, Delaware Titans sends a message to the other contenders by thumping the Blue Devils in a convincing win.
PHI started strong behind the one-on-one spirited play of Bong Imperial. However, his aggressiveness resulted in three quick fouls even before the end of the first half. PHI maintained their lead throughout most of the game up until the latter part of the second half. With a very aggressive pressing defense led by the Titan's Steve Antonio, the Titans stole the ball several times from PHI and made easy baskets.
In addition, Bong Imperial was called for two more fouls and he fouled out with five minutes left in the game. With no point guard to break the Titan's pressing defense, PHI had problems bringing the ball half court and led to additional fast break points for the Titans.
In the closing minutes of the game, Jomar Ugarte (Titan's MVP - most visible player) entered the game without informing the referees. He was close to being called a technical. However, he immediately atoned for his mistake by scoring a beautiful running bank shot and sealed the game for the Titans.
The Titans now look forward to a formidable task of upsetting the GK Warriors in the playoff. As they say in Philippines when speculating on basketball championship games, the "ball is round and anything can happen".

why does it sound like the only person playing for PHI is imperial? that after he fouled out, the team didn't know how to play the game anymore. isn't basketball a 5 man team? tsk tsk tsk imperial you might want to look for new team mates next year.

It wasn't when Imperial fouled out that the team started going downhill, They were already going downhill while he was playing. What they didn't have during the game was a legit point guard to take the ball down. Angelo could not make it to the game thus they had to resort on Imperial running the point position. But then the Titans figured this out and applied a full-court press to choke the team. They used there bench wisely. they were about 15 man deep and PHI only had 9 players and all of them playing the same position. For somebody to say that a person needs to change teams because of a meltdown for one game is completely unnecessary. The whole team has been together going on 4 years now. And due to injuries and military commitments, they haven't played a whole season together yet. What PHI needs is a whiole bunch of commited players that will show up every single game. Having a JP/JC/Alan Destreza, Ian Orbeta, Jeff Holcomb, Justin Mercadi, Will Imperial is just not enough to survive the league. They have there own roles but there key players needs to step up and show up. i.e. they need there point guard Angelo, they're center Humphrey. The only thing bad about PHI is they do not have a back-up for this key positions thus they hurt when it comes to situations like saturday. I am a 100% sure things would have never went south with PHI last saturday if Angelo showed up to take the ball down. Imperial just got tired and most especially the one ref just kept calling everything, vice versa with the Titans. Well, there is always next year!! Team PHI, make the necessary changes and make things work. Come out strong next year prove to the league that you deserve to be up top!!!! GO PHI!!!!!

I second d motion for Phi fan club president that Titans USEd their bench wisely.. while Phi didnt even do something when the Titans are crawling back.. thats the problem with Phi.. they all relay on Imperial and Mercado.. maybe because Phi thinks that Imperial is Kobe24, but unfortunately he's just Kobe8.. difference? kobe24 trust his team more...than kobe8..though its the same mentality.. like what happend to LA vs Boston recently..
i just wonder why Phi doesnt go small when Titans apply their pressing defense.. not even calling timeouts when it is needed and to top it all.. i saw them hating or shouting each other.. is that what you call a TEAM....for 4 years?

Youre so affected by PHI losing, is it a personal problem you have with them? hehe, kidding. But seriously, dont be all too emotional about it. Teams win, teams lose.. most will experience arguments within the team but it matters not as long as by the end of the day they are still a team. Regardless if they win or not. Did you see PHI going up to their long time friends the Titans after the game even taking a team picture with them. They are the only team that lost before that I know would come up to the winning team and somewhat celebrate with them. PAAD, competitive as it is, by the end of the day its all about playing together as one community and both the Titans and PHI have shown what good sportmanship is all about. PHI will learn from their mistakes as we have from years before so lets just get over it, Titans just played better that day end of story. It sucks PHI lost since I was anticipating them playing against GK which I believe would give the Warriors the most problem out of all the teams this year even MAYBE beating them but unfortunately they lost (where was hump, vibal and their PG)?
And to hu hu hu PHI; you should read the article again, they are saying that PHI lost due to a lack of point guard not because Imperial fouled out (which reflects poor refs yet again). So no need to point out negative things about them or even say something uncalled for like "Imperial needs to switch teams". Youre disrespecting the players by saying something like that, im sure Mr. Imperial is not that shallow to turn away from his friends for an innocent game of community basketball.

its always about imperial..its a team sport. get everybody involved. unless your team is winning then your 30 something points is nothing. "just bcoz your good, it doesnt mean that the rest of the team sucks" and as to the guy who said they all have their role to play, them let them play their role. give them a chance.

i just respect this team and love this team above anyone else. thats why seeing this team shattered by unfortunate turn of event kills me.
i saw Phi play together as a TEAM. when then they played HW, i know that HW is not Titans or GKW when it comes to teamplay and defense , but seeing them (Phi) play that day,makes me believe that GKW has a competition...
i think the coach of Phi needs to work and lead this team in every category. Not just designing ONE PLAY for Oneplayer.
to gk kami... i'm not disrespecting imperial or anybody else. it's just that from all the comments i read on this blog, it's imperial this imperial that, even comparing him to kobe but what a disappointment! all i'm saying was basketball is a team sport. there may be one who's so good but still they cannot play this game alone. that someone needs help from the team and needs to help the team, to win. and i'm not the only one who's disappointed by the last game they played. read the other comments.
All the PHI players are good players. But in any team, there are some who will stand out, and these are Imperial and Mercado. The team played their hearts out, specially these 2 players. When the going get's tough, you would see these players stepping up and play hard, which are a true signs of a leader. The PHI team should not bow their heads in defeat, but instead they should be proud knowing that they gave it all.
At the end, the better team, at that particular game, won! So kudos to both teams, specially the TITANs who showed that "never say die" spirit!

Stop complaining and explaining, why your team got a horrible game last Saturday.. Stop making excuses because nobody cares whats the reason behind your team unsuccessful season.
Don't say that your team loss because
1)need a legit point guard
2)not been together because of injuries/ military commitments
3)with out your center Humphrey
4)No back ups
5) Imperial got tired
6) one ref just kept calling everything

What you need is a GOOD COACH that will lead this team. Maximize the teams strength and minimize its weakness inside and outside the playing court. Because if YOU DO HAVE ONE...then
1) you'll find a way to fill up the spot when your PG doesnt show up
2) Won't get players with commitments or reasons not to show up
3) Can use other players that can play center..ASIDE FROM HUMPHREY (did he play?)
4)Thats why you should get a good coach.. to get back ups (game plan etc)
5)Imperial will get some rest even he's not fouled out yet.
6)not blaming the ref
and don't talk about the word COMMITTED if you don't know its meaning
like what Phi_no1 said.. there is NO "I" if you wanna talk about TEAMWORK
and don't forget A BASKETBALL TEAM can't be SUCCESSFUL with only ONE player on it, he needs the other four.. and a SUCCESSFUL BASKETBALL TEAM wouldn't be successful if they lack a GOOD MOTIVATOR and TEACHER on their side.

You guys are not fair at all. Youre labeling Will like hes the most selfish player in the league. Truth be told he is not that type of player. He does trust his teammates and maybe youll see him with the ball most of the time but thats how they run things in their team. In my opinion, Will attracts a lot of attention on offense so they do right by running the plays through him freeing up everyone else on the team, enabling players like Mercado, Vibal, Destreza, Hump, & Orbeta to score. Their pts per game is somewhat like this
Will 17pts/game
Mercado 15pts/game
Destreza 12per
Vibal 9per
Orbeta 5per
Thats balance compared to most teams. So lets not label someone as selfish when their really not. They lost not bc of him. Its not having a PG that day that cost them the game.

I agree with you, seeing PHI that weekend with all their players there did look scary and I was hoping GK would play them. That would be a great game. Now I feel the best team in their division is out of the playoffs. Sucks, I would have love to play them.
and to huhuhu phi, I know we are all disappointed with PHI but lets not label Will as a selfish player, i dont think he is. I dont even think he would rather score than win, who does. Well maybe GK will see them next year!

All of you can say a team needs this or a team needs that. Each of you are trying to sound off as if youre the primary game analyst for ESPN at the Palaro HEHE. No ones an expert. No one was making excuses, the Titans simply played their hearts out, it was a great game for them, PHI however, opposite of course, bad game, they just lost simple as that. Why is it that when WSA losing to GK or the Titans losing to TFC everyone is ok with it but PHI is being criticize like they dont have a right to lose? Why dont you coach the team if your so good? lol.
Its harder than it looks kabayan. We all shout at the sidelines during games wther is pro sports or amateur games telling players and coaches to do this or that but in the end of they day the only ones who understands what happened better than anyone are those who were on the hardcourt playing the actual game.

Team PHI needs a good coach!!! And tell me this, How will you run your offense without a "LEGIT" point guard??? Thats like playing a football game without a quarterback!! I just wanna make it clear (no pun intended).. The coach from PHI already made it pretty clear that they lost to the Titans. (SCROLL UP AND READ ABOVE IF YOU HAVENT READ IT ALREADY) So its not fair to say that they are making excuses. Especially since they are friends with the Titans. I think they give eachother more respect than you make it seem like.
PHI fan club president, I know you're just showing support towards your team as a fan but I think to be honest you're hurting your teams reputation more by saying what you're saying. Let the players/coach from PHI speak for themselves rather than you pointing out what seems to be excuses that they themselves have not expressed.
It doesnt really matter who won and who lost between the two teams because GK would've/will beat them anyway......
